Walks and walking in Coniston
The Old Man of Coniston, the highest peak in the Coniston range can be seen rising dramatically behind the houses when seen from the village centre or from Coniston Water. Coniston is a good centre for walks whether low level easy flat walks or for high level walking on the fells. We are happy to advise or help you find a walk to suit you around the Lake District.
Coniston history
Coniston Water will always be remembered as the place where Donald Campbell made his water speed record attempts which ultimately claimed his life. With the water speed record already in his hands at over 280mph (Coniston 1966), on 4th January 1967 he attempted to raise the record to 300mph. He was well on course for this when disaster struck.
